Wearing a matching set of underwear makes everyone feel like they have their life together juust a little bit more amirite? And when the sets are this pretty, at least part of it needs to be shown! With the underwear as outerwear trend, there is definitely a fine line. Some people will completely embrace it, wearing just a bralet and absolute slay it. However for the slightly more PG (me) I know it can be slightly harder to embrace *I have visions of everyone I passed telling me I’d forgotten my top* so I thought I’d share a post on my take on wearing underwear as outerwear. How to actually and practically show off your brand new pretty lace bodysuit/bra in real life without a nip-slip or showing off inappropriate levels of cleavage.
I was lucky enough to receive a few goodies from lingerie brand, B Temptd after they kindly got in touch to ask if I liked the look of any of their sets. They were as pretty in person as they were online and when I tried them on, honestly I couldn’t believe how comfortable they were. It’s not often that comfort and style go hand in hand when we’re talking lingerie so they’ve quickly become my go-tos. Another of my absolute favourites is the handmade bralet from Vanilla Lace Apparel. I especially love the extra bit of material that means you can be sure even if you unbutton your shirt just a little bit further you won’t be showing off any extra skin.
Personally one of my favourite ways to wear the underwear as outerwear trend is wearing lace bras and bodysuits underneath buttoned down blouses and low cut tops. I think there’s something classy yet sexy (sorry I hate this word too but for lack of a better one..) about that look and especially in winter (or just the UK in general) when it’s absolutely too cold to be wearing a bralet out in the evening. This style is the perfect alternative to give your pretty bralets some airtime. Another alternative is a low v-neck knit or cardigan buttoned up and when summer comes around It’s the perfect alternative to wear with those low cut strappy camis (rather than the uncomfortable and ugly strapless bra alternative!) My advice would be to make sure the bra isn’t a push-up and doesn’t give you too much cleavage. That’s when this look is quickly taken from classy to trashy. Try and match the lace to something in the top/jumper/knit or keep it similar colours. For example with a dark knit go for black or with a blouse like I’m wearing below which is a light, white-ish blue, go for white lace. This keeps it understated!
And if you are brave enough to head out out wearing just a bodysuit like this insane Missy Empire number. My top tip is to get your hand on some nude coloured nipple covers! You can’t see them through the lave and it avoids that flash photography disaster.. A lace bra the same colour as the bodysuit does sometimes work although can detract from the delicate lace detailing. OR if you’re extra bold and give no fucks then hey, just wear the bodysuit, nip slip and all!
