Ah the pressure of your twenties, it’s a well blogged about topic but it’s something I’ve wanted to put my own two cents in on for a while now. You hit 21, huge piss-up over and suddenly you get hit in the face with a mountain of pressure coming from every angle. ‘Cause you see, you’re meant to know it all by this point. Have it all figured out, life plan mapped out and wrapped up with a bow on top. And if you don’t? Well…
Do you want to travel? If you do, you better do it now while you’ve got the chance. Do you want to get on the property ladder? Well, you better save every penny you earn because there’s no chance of that in this current market. But while you’re saving every penny, you should also go out and be reckless, because that’s what you’re twenties are for! By the way, hows your career going? ‘Cause you should be on your ascent to your dream role right now. Although while you’re at it you better jet out to Australia and hostel-hop down the gold coast- or you’ll regret it later!
“The struggle is real.”
An over-used hashtag to say the least but mainly because, it really is. There’s so many things you’re meant to do in your twenties, it can feel as though if you don’t get on the travel-career-mortgage wagon quick, then you’ll be left behind. It’s a time you’re supposed to join ‘the real world’ – that condescending phrase used by anyone who deems them self old enough to say it. Because what is this so-called ‘real world’- if it’s this magical place where you have everything figured out then, yes maybe I haven’t joined the real world just yet. But if it’s working 5 days a week and balancing bills then I’m sure the majority of us feel like we’re already (unwillingly) in the club.
I’d love to finish this post off with a wholly satisfying conclusion that actually I’ve worked it all out and I’m going to let you all in on the secret. But honestly, at 24, I am still in this as much as the next twenty-something year old. The only big revelation I have for you is, we have time. Plenty of it. And so the most important thing is to just live in the now and enjoy life, with or without a plan.
