High-street to high-end | Tips on putting together an expensive looking outfit

How to look expensive on a highstreet budget: H&M knit, Zara shirt and Pretty Little Thing shoulder bag.

One thing I always look out for when buying my clothes is how expensive they look. I shop pretty much everything on the high-street (let’s be real, my paycheck won’t stretch to anything else!) but I really think you can pick up some great things on the high-street, some which are just as nice (if not nicer) than their designer counter-parts. Find the right pieces and you can put together an outfit that looks as though it’s straight out of Vogue. You just need to know what to look for.

There are 3 main things I look for when buying clothes….

1. Fabrics.

Fabric plays a huge part in how expensive a garment looks. Thicker, textured fabrics often look more high-end, especially when it comes to jumpers and jackets. Polyester is often best staying away from as unless it is a good mix, it will usually look fairly cheap (plus cling to every lump/bump). If it’s a blouse or similar piece with a lighter fabric, look for a lot of movement and with a shirt such as this one, crisp, structured fabric will look most expensive (although crease like a b*tch!)

2. Details

It’s all in the details! These earrings were from Mango, super inexpensive but add them to an outfit with other gold hardware and accessories and you can double the price of the look. The bow detail on the sleeves of this shirt and the tied bow at the back of the neck are all little additions which add value to the look. Matching the gold earrings with gold nail varnish and the gold hardware on the bag helps you look a lot more put together.

3. Colour palette

Now I’m not against wearing colour but I do always find if you’re looking for an easy way to look more expensive then neutrals are your best friend!

An extra tip is to layer! Quite often if something doesn’t look quite as put together as I would like I find just adding another layer is all it needs!

Onto the star of the show… This bag has all the Prada vibes for about 1/10th of the price tag. A structured bag like this will immediately look more expensive than one which is less shaped. The faux snakeskin material and hardware details are things to look for as they will bump up how expensive it looks. Those bags which are really soft and sag as soon as you put things in them are one to avoid! They’ll cheapen the look of the outfit.

This bag came with a colourful strap which made it look a lot cheaper, by adding an old black strap it changes it up completely – with cheap accessories it’s worth looking out for customising opportunities! Pretty Little Thing do a great selection of inexpensive accessories, especially bags which look a lot more high-end than they are. These are my favourites.

I’m so in love with your bag! When I first saw it, I definitely thought that it looked more expensive than high street. And your layering is just perfect!
